Explained installment, bonus Illustrated King James Bible w/ signed paper work, deposit by Weds, can visit house Weds. 11 a.m. Weds visit. No one home. Thurs call. Housekeeper answer. LoH not home. Fri call, busy signal all day. Tues. visit, LoH answers door, completes sign up. $2.80 deposit collected.

Follow: LoH answers. Interest in Holiday Song Book series. Explain quarterly billing, shipments, Spring/Easter, Summer/Travel/Patriotic, Autumn/Americana, Winter/Christmas. Bonus harmonica. LoH asks if Stephen Foster songs in series. Interest in Camptown Races, I Dream of Jeannie, Nellie was a Lady. Remembers from childhood. Asks if I remember. Says she was music teacher at Bancroft School. Asks to hold phone. Hear footsteps, then piano playing. Music stops. LoH doesn’t return to phone.

Follow: Man answers. Says he’s LoH’s brother. He loves books but is widower on small pension. Says no room in small house for more books. I explain miniature classics series, Gulliver Trav., Great Expec, Aesop, Tarzan Jungle Stories, Robin Hood, each book size of deck of cards, 49¢ @ w/complimentary magnifying glass. Says the old tree came down in his back yard after windstorm last week. Says when a big tree comes down things change. Light changes. Views and vantages built up over lifetime change. Things looks different because is different. Says it’s too bright and hot in house, ends call.

Follow: Party answers. Doesn’t identify. Says it’s 2 a.m. I say couldn’t be 2 a.m. He raises voice. Asks for company name, supervisor. Says will call police if I call again.

Follow: Now realize C. Bowden name familiar. Address is familiar, two blocks from where I grew up. Knocked on her door collecting for UNICEF when I was kid. She was older lady even then, many years ago. She had braces on legs from polio. She would answer door and invite me into parlor. She would sit down at typewriter, roll check in typewriter cylinder. Keys and carriage fly as she would type out check to UNICEF for $1.00. This would be biggest donation by far. I remembered seeing her once outside of her house, her coming down sidewalk toward house. She slowly worked half crutches with forearm braces. I stood a block away but I could see pain on her face. It appeared as though her legs wouldn’t work or swing without strength from throughout her body, everywhere else. Across street was a young woman, maybe college girl. She wore saddle shoes. She walked smoothly and effortlessly down the sidewalk. She was thinking about something, but not about her body, or her body not working. Hard to imagine older lady still living so many years later. Name definitely is hers. I bet she thought I would amount to more than this.
